In this article published with SFPE FPE Xtra, Jonathan Hodges investigates the use of data to improve wildfire modeling. The spread of wildfires involves complex interactions of many physical elements. Added to that are the challenges relating to topology, weather and fuel sources, all of which are unique to each wildfire. In the future, integration of data-driven models in operational tools can improve the accuracy and computational efficiency of existing wildfire models.
